Passive / On-line Testing of monoblocks / modules / sub-strings...

EXAMPLE: 6-cell, 12-volt module

The average response of a battery in a passive test is the averaged response of the individual cells. Thus, a battery (or monoblock) with an extremely weak cell can exhibit a similar response to a battery (or monoblock) containing cells having similar, but somewhat diminished, performance.

However, the difference between the two cases is critically important.

It's like having a chain with thinner links, as opposed to a very strong chain, but with a single weak link. The average strength of all the links in both chains may be the same, but which chain will deliver the needed performance? It's impossible to tell, without examining the strength of every link.

In a battery, by measuring an average response in a passive test, which does not apply a large testing stress, it also is impossible to tell the difference.

A battery test that does not test individual cells can expose your power system to unexpected service loss.
